Tips for Refacing Your Old Kitchen Cabinets Bowen Remodeling & Design

The key to doing this job well is to properly prepare for it. Start by removing all of the doors. The entire surface of the cabinet needs to be thoroughly cleaned.

The kitchen is the heart of the home because so much of our lives take place there: cooking, eating, socializing, homework, the list goes on. This is why a kitchen remodel is at the top of so many home improvement to-do lists. But a full remodel can be very expensive. Sometimes the best you can do is kitchen refacing, which can produce dramatic results without the huge price tag. Kitchen cabinets are especially ripe for refacing. Read on for a few tips on refacing your old kitchen cabinets to give your whole kitchen a brand new look.

Proper Prep

The key to doing this job well is to properly prepare for it. Start by removing all of the doors. The entire surface of the cabinet needs to be thoroughly cleaned. Grease builds up over time on the surfaces of the cabinets, and it needs to be washed off, and then the cabinet surfaces need to be sanded with fine sandpaper.

Stiles And Rails

The stiles are the vertical parts of the cabinet frame and the rails are the horizontal parts. Once you have them cleaned and sanded, you can apply veneer to the surfaces. Make sure That the grain of the veneer is uniform as you apply it to the stiles and rails. This might be easier if you cut the veneer into strips. Use a woodblock to press any air out from under the veneer as you press it onto the wood.

Doors

The doors themselves can be covered with veneer if needed, but they could also simply be sanded and then sealed or painted. When you are ready to hang the doors, use a level and make sure that they are balanced and level before screwing them on. Always triple-check how the doors hang before tightening all of the screws down.

Hardware

The finishing touch of the project is the hardware. You don’t have to reuse the old hardware if you don’t love it or it doesn’t match the new style. Drawer and door pulls should match the new style and the overall look that you’re going for in the room. Even though the hinges aren’t super visible, make sure that they at least are a similar material to the knobs and pulls.
