Keeping Your Pets Safe During a Remodel

Bowen Remodeling & Design Dog Safe

Remodels are stressful for everyone, especially our pets who don’t understand what’s happening.

Embarking on a home remodeling project is an exciting time for you and your family – at least, it is for most of your family. The reality is that a remodeling project can also be stressful as there are people coming and going, things change, there is often a lot of noise, and generally, life is disrupted. For most of us, it is worth the discomfort of the process to have the finished space of our dreams. The one part of your family that might not feel that way is the pet part. Remodels can be extremely stressful for your pets. Read on for some tips to help keep your pets calm and happy during the process.

Introduce the Workers

Take time to introduce the workers to your pet each time they come in so that the pet has a chance to become familiar with how they look, smell, and sound. Once the pet gets used to their presence, the workers will be much less of a stressing factor for the pet.

Get Them Outside

If possible, get outside with your pet during the brunt of the construction, especially during demolition. This will get them out of the noise and dust, and getting to spend time with you outside can also be a really positive thing for the pet. This is obviously much easier with a dog than a cat, though some cats do take very well to being walked on a harness and leash.

Crate Them If Possible

If your pet is used to being crated, putting them in a crate where they feel safe is a great way to make the process of construction less stressful. However, if they are not used to being crated, now is not the right time to try it out. Being locked up away from you when they are already stressed out will just make it worse.

Get Some Help

If possible, opt for help. Have a pet sitter come in to care for your pets or take them to daycare to get them out of the house, especially if you are away at work and they can’t be crated. It is unsafe to just let them run the house on their own during a construction project.

Toys And Treats

Our pets, like the rest of us, can benefit from some positive distractions. When they’ve had a particularly eventful day of construction, give the pets new toys or treats to help them calm down and relax. This can reinforce that even though the day was hard, they get a positive outcome at the end of it. The new toy can also provide some much-needed distraction and, in many cases, a way to play off some energy from being cooped up.
