Should You Choose Cabinet Refacing Over Replacement?

Bowen Remodeling Cabinet Refacing

When you’re doing a kitchen remodel or just an update, cabinet refacing might be preferable to a full replacement.

When you want to change the look of your kitchen or do a full remodel, you have a few options on how to change up your kitchen cabinets: paint them, reface them, or replace them. It’s not always easy to choose between these options because they all have their own pros and cons. In addition, your personal circumstances and the state of your current cabinets should be considered when you need to determine which option is best for you.

What is Cabinet Replacement?

Cabinet replacement is where all of the existing cabinetry is removed and replaced with all-new cabinetry. This is the most common choice for both cabinet updates, and full kitchen remodels. The old cabinets are landfilled in this process, and the new cabinets need to be properly leveled and installed. It is highly recommended to hire professionals to complete this process, and it typically costs anywhere from $13,000 to $50,000.

What is Cabinet Refacing?

In cabinet refacing, existing cabinets have a new veneer applied to them to update their look. This is a simpler process that takes less time, is less invasive, and costs anywhere between 30% and 50% less than a cabinet replacement. A refacing can also include adding decorative or architectural elements that change up the look even more. Like replacements, a refacing is also best done by a professional as it does have a steep learning curve and requires specialized tools to complete properly. It can achieve the same or similar results as a full cabinet replacement in many situations, but it isn’t necessarily always the best option.

Which is the Right Option?

Which option works best for you depends on your own personal circumstances and how you want to change your cabinets.

A cabinet replacement is often the best option when you want entirely different cabinetry or if your current cabinetry is in significant disrepair. Since the old cabinetry is tossed during a replacement, it’s recommended that a refacing be considered before turning to a full replacement. Sometimes it simply won’t work, but it never hurts to fully consider the options.

For cabinet refacing, it can save you time and money, and it’s a far less invasive process. If you only want to update your cabinetry, refacing is a quick and easy way to do it. This process is also less wasteful, especially if you have solid cabinetry that is still in good condition. There aren’t as many companies that offer cabinet refacing, so it might take a little more effort to find a professional available to do it, but the results will be worth it.
