What Kind of Paint is Best for Your Bathroom?

Bowen Remodeling Paint Bathroom

Choosing the right kind of paint for your bathroom goes beyond shade and color—it needs to be able to withstand moisture, too.

When it comes to painting a bathroom, it can be difficult to know what the best options are. Paint isn’t exactly known for being especially resistant to moisture, and you want something that protects your walls and ceiling while still being easy to clean. Ultimately, the color that you choose will be entirely up to you and your design, but you should carefully consider what kind of paint and finish will work best for your bathroom so that you get a look as resilient as it is stunning.

Choose Latex Paint

When choosing the right paint for your bathroom, it’s best to go with water-based latex paint rather than oil paint. Latex paints are low-maintenance and dry quickly, making them easier to use and easier to clean without damage. They are also more resistant to moisture, making them the perfect choice for bathroom applications.

Oil paint, on the other hand, is not as easy to apply or clean. It is also more susceptible to yellowing, especially in a bathroom that doesn’t get a lot of light. Worst of all, oil paint releases volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which pollute the air (including the air in your home). This is a health concern, especially in an enclosed space.

Go With Gloss or Semi-Gloss

Flat paints look stunning, there is no doubt about it. Unfortunately, they are not as moisture-resistant as gloss and semi-gloss paints, so they’re better left out of your bathroom. In addition, gloss and semi-gloss will be easier to clean than flat paint. Full gloss will have the most binders, making it the toughest paint option for any bathroom that will resist moisture and damage. One of the most important reasons to choose a gloss or semi-gloss paint, however, is that their resistance to moisture will also mitigate the risk of your bathroom developing mildew and mold.

Remember the Ceiling

Your ceiling should also be painted and cared for, just as much as your walls. Like with the walls, it is best to avoid flat paint and instead go for a semi-gloss or a satin finish. If you choose a satin finish, you will need a bathroom that does not experience excessive moisture and humidity—otherwise, the satin paint won’t hold up well and could allow the growth of mold and mildew. If you enjoy a humid bathroom or you have a wet bath, your best bet is to choose a semi-gloss for the ceiling.
